Nest Secure is a great option for apartments for a few reasons. One, they offer month to month contracting, which is awesome because you might not be there forever especially if the dryers don’t get fixed soon— sorry, that’s just me projecting a little. Two, the installation is super easy and won’t require any drilling or hardwiring in your rented space, and three, you can choose to self monitor if you’d like. I also like that the Nest Secure system is super minimalist with only five components. In a smaller space, the last thing you want to be bogged down with is an extensive security system. Nest Secure will blend right into your space. Brinks has integrations with Google Home making it easy to vocally control your system. I purchased Brinks Home Complete with Video, which includes the Brinks Home Touch, a SkyBell Slim Line Video Doorbell, a glass break detector, and a cellular communicator. Installation is DIY, although you’ll have some help over the phone, and professional monitoring is not required! However, if you do choose professional monitoring, Brinks only offers binding three year contracts, a definite drawback. On a more positive note, Brinks has a 4. 1 Google rating and excellent customer support reviews.

Scout Alarm works with the smart home platforms from Amazon, Nest and IFTTT. When we tested Scout's siren, it wasn't as loud as other security alarms we tested, but it is loud enough that other sounds in your home shouldn’t drown it out. Scout's one year warranty isn't very long compared to the three year warranties from competitors, and the company doesn't sell any security cameras for the system. It's not as easy to set up and use as Scout Alarm and abode, but it works well enough for self monitoring your home as well as for professional monitoring. For basic home security options, you can get the Iris Security Pack and the Iris Smart Hub. This isn't a combined kit like other systems we tested, but Lowe's sometimes includes the Smart Hub as a bonus item at no cost. Even at full price, the Security Pack and Smart Hub are less expensive than the competition. Iris has three no contract service plans: basic, premium and professional monitoring. The basic plan is free, gives you control over your system and sends alerts to your smartphone when the alarm goes off. The premium plan $9.

Additional equipment, such as glass break detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, can be purchased separately and added to the system. As with many other modern alarm systems, the customer can monitor the system remotely via their smart phone or other electronic device. Additionally, the system can be set up to control the heat, lights, and locks in the house remotely as well. They can generally detect motion from 40 to 80 feet away and can be connected to your home alarm system or to a security camera. There are two main types of home security motion sensors: active detectors, whichemit light, sound or other forms of energy and recognize when that energy is being disturbed; or passive detectors, which recognize incoming signals sent from the disturbance, such as heat or sound waves. The revolution brought on by wireless technologies, smart phones, and mobile apps have changed all of that.
